National Women in Transport

The National Women in Transport initiative brings together government and industry to promote gender equality across the transport sector. We support greater representation of women at all levels by encouraging meaningful dialogue, building strong partnerships, and fostering a more inclusive culture.

We recently held a networking lunch, bringing together colleagues from all corners of the transport sector.

The purpose of these events is to highlight the importance of gender equality by celebrating the achievements of women, building meaningful connections and sparking new conversations that help to drive change.

Background

Since 2021, the National Transport Commission has developed and managed the National Women in Transport initiative.

The overarching goal of the program is to demonstrate that transport can be an attractive, sustainable career choice for women. Figures from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA*, 2023-24) indicate that women make up an average of 22% of the total workforce and 10% of CEO positions across the Australian road and rail sectors. We want to encourage more women to enter and thrive in the sector and there are several on-going activities to support this.

*WGEA industry figures are collected from private sector employers with 100 or more employees. This data is intended as a general indicator only.

Key activities

The National Women in Transport Speaker Bureau highlights the expertise and impact of female leaders across the transport sector. These accomplished women are innovators and changemakers, shaping the future of the industry through their work and public speaking. By celebrating their achievements, we amplify women's voices and broaden the vision of what success can look like in transport careers.

Bi-annual networking lunches are held twice a year in capital cities across Australia. These lunches are well attended and serve our industry by creating a regular opportunity to bring together transport colleagues and professionals. Each event features a keynote address by a thought-leader on a current topic, followed by time to connect over lunch. These gatherings foster collaboration between women and men in transport and support deeper conversations about working together for gender equality.

We also partner with conference organisers and researchers on relevant projects to advance the gender equality agenda and track progress towards minimising gender gaps. The National Women in Transport website provides industry resources, research and presentations, while the LinkedIn page is full of news on projects, innovation and progress for women in transport.
