The review of the Standards commenced in August 2025. It will consider medical, legal and social developments with input from governments, medical professionals and the community. Stakeholder consultations are planned for late 2025 and will run until early 2026.
We will be talking to a diverse group of stakeholders to ensure the new Standards consider a range of perspectives – from those with medical conditions to those that diagnose and manage them.
The Standards provide clearer guidance that supports people with medical conditions who want to drive when compared with previous arrangements, which left these decisions for medical professionals without guidance.
The updated edition is planned for publication in 2027.
Background
The Assessing Fitness to Drive Standards support a nationally consistent framework for managing driving eligibility for commercial and private vehicle drivers.
They are an important part of ensuring those who drive are fit to do so.
The Standards are used by health professionals to guide their assessment and management of patients whose diagnosed long-term medical conditions may affect their driving ability. The Standards are also used by driver licensing authorities to inform decisions about a person’s fitness to drive that are consistent, fair and prioritise road safety.
The review of the Standards will consider new medical evidence, stakeholder feedback and experience gained since the last edition in 2022.
This work supports safety for all road users, while ensuring people with medical conditions are considered individually, and treated fairly and consistently.
The updated Standards will be published in 2027.
