- What are your views on the Infrastructure and Transport Ministers Meeting’s proposal to increase heavy vehicle registration and Road User Charges by 2.5 per cent in 2021–22?
I believe that the current model is too simplistic and that a technology driven solution could be easily implemented that produces better outcomes. Such a model would be based on a GPS tracking system fitted to each vehicle with the user charge then being able to reflect the actual milage and where that milage is occurring. Heavy vehicle miles on small rural roads could then be charged at a much higher rate to reflect the dame done to lightly built roads by heavy vehicles. Diesel cars and small vans would not end up subsidising heavy vehicles. Such a model could also be used to influence freight culture and the desirable use of railways by putting a premium on the charge applied to heavy vehicles that are running parallel journeys to more environmentally friendly alternatives.
