Heavy vehicle charges help fund the building and maintenance of Australia’s roads by recovering the cost of wear and tear from vehicles using them. Australia’s transport ministers agreed to progress a preferred increase of 6 per cent to heavy vehicle charges for 2026-27, and have asked the NTC to undertake public consultation on the proposed increase. Feedback will be provided to ministers for their consideration.

We are reviewing the Assessing Fitness to Drive Standards (the Standards) in partnership with Austroads. These Standards support consistent and evidence-based medical assessments for driver licensing across Australia. They support medical decisions based upon an individual’s capacity to drive, not solely on an underlying medical condition.
