Undertaking an automated vehicle readiness assessment for Australia

This project aims to measure Australia’s readiness for commercial automated vehicle (AV) deployment. We’ll partner with the Commonwealth Government and collaborate with state and territory governments on this work.

The review is part of the work we’re doing to create a national regulatory framework for AVs

Project background

There has never been a review of this type for Australia. It will take a holistic approach and look at both light and heavy vehicles.

This work will provide industry and government with a better understanding of how Australia can prepare for increased AV technology use.

We’ll evaluate Australia’s AV readiness by looking at:

  • policy and legislation
  • technology and innovation
  • infrastructure
  • business and consumer acceptance.

Transport ministers gave us approval to undertake this work in May 2021. We plan to report back to them in May 2022.

Engagement approach

The NTC will work closely with the Commonwealth Government and state and territory governments on the review.
