Bus & coach / Safety

Unfortunately Australia's buses and coaches are over-represented in Australian road and workplace injuries and fatalities, impacting not only drivers, but also customers and the rest of the Australian community.

The NTC maintains laws and rules, such as the National Heavy Vehicle Law, Australian Vehicle Standards Rules, Australian Road Rules, fatigue regulations and driver medical standards that promote industry safety.

Our work aims to ensure that rules promoting bus safety and how they are enforced results in safer roads for all road users. The NTC is investigating how emerging technologies and in-vehicle telematics, such as electronic work diaries, on-board mass monitoring and cooperative intelligent transport systems, can improve safety outcomes by:

  • making it easier for drivers to know when they need to take a break
  • increasing driver awareness of safety risks
  • reducing crashes on Australian roads.
