Intelligent Access Program
Updated: 27 November 2008
The Intelligent Access Program (IAP) provides for improved heavy vehicle access to the road network in return for monitoring, by vehicle telematics, of their compliance with specific access conditions.
It is a voluntary program that state and territory road authorities can apply as an operating condition to manage changes in risk (for example, the risk to vulnerable bridgesfrom wider vehicle road access can be managed through IAP route compliance).
In broad terms, it uses existing vehicle telematics which comprises a combination of global positioning systems (GPS), in-vehicle sensors and transmitters, and communications technology to transmit vehicle performance data to a base station for downloading and analysis.
The IAP uses this technology, through certified service providers, to remotely monitor heavy vehicles to ensure they are complying with their agreed operating conditions and report the information to relevant road authorities to an evidentiary standard.
More information is available at the TCA website here.
