What is Assessing Fitness to Drive (AFTD)?

'Assessing Fitness to Drive Commercial and Private Vehicle Drivers' contains medical standards for use when assessing drivers’ health for the purpose of driver licensing.

AFTD was developed by the National Transport Commission and Austroads and is nationally endorsed by all Australian transport Ministers. AFTD replaces the previous private vehicle driver standards (Assessing Fitness to Drive 2001) and the commercial vehicle driver standards (Medical Examinations for Commercial Vehicle Drivers 1997).

The current edition of AFTD is currently under review. For more information, visit  Review of Transport Medical Standards.

Why are medical standards important?

While many factors contribute to safety on the road, driver health is an important consideration and drivers must meet certain medical standards to ensure that their health status does not increase the risk of a crash in which they, or other road users, may be killed or injured. National driver medical standards aim to contribute to improved road safety in Australia by facilitating management of drivers in relation to their health.

Who uses the AFTD?

This publication is intended for use by any health professional who is involved in assessing a person’s fitness to drive, including:

  • Medical practitioners (general practitioners and specialists)
  • Optometrists
  • Psychologists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists.

Driver Licensing Authorities
