An EWD is an electronic recording system that can record work and rest hours for fatigue-regulated heavy vehicle drivers. EWDs are a voluntary alternative to the paper-based diary that is currently used to meet fatigue management obligations. The EWD can make compliance with these obligations easier and help ensure that drivers work safely and avoid fines. They also help other parties such as transport operators demonstrate that they are managing driver fatigue.
While the EWD is recognised in the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), EWDs have not yet been approved. The NTC has been involved in a number of projects to develop the policy and legislative framework for EWDs.
These projects include the:
- EWD operational pilot led by the NSW Government (2011 to 2013)
- preparation of relating to privacy and enforcement policies (approved by the Transport and Infrastructure Council in November 2014)
- amendments to the HVNL (to be introduced in 2015).
