Driving and Your Health
Updated: 13 October 2008
The Driving and Your Health (DYH) campaign is designed to alert operators and drivers to the importance of health for road safety. The safe and efficient transport of goods and passengers is vital for Australia, so the task of the commercial vehicle driver is an important and challenging one. Driver health is a key consideration and one that is identified in the National Heavy Vehicle Safety Strategy 2003-2010.
The Driving and Your Health campaign is a National Transport Commission (NTC) and Austroads initiative designed to support awareness and action in relation to the health of commercial vehicle drivers. The campaign followed the release of revised driver medical standards Assessing Fitness to Drive 2003, which apply nationally to all commercial vehicle drivers, including drivers of heavy transport vehicles and public passenger vehicles.
The DYH campaign was communicated directly to drivers via a comprehensive media strategy, including print and radio media. This website provides information for both operators and commercial vehicle drivers including:
-
information about the health requirements for safe driving including the roles and responsibilities of drivers and operators, and the features of the revised medical standards; and
-
resources to raise awareness of health issues and the driver medical standards amongst commercial vehicle drivers. |
 | Campaign Material
A driver’s health can affect public safety and the environment as well as their own safety. There is therefore much to be gained from initiatives that actively support driver health. The extensive campaign (March - August 2005), provided industry with practical information and tools to promote general driver awareness. The following resources have been produced to help guide operators in managing and supporting driver health:
-
Operator Guide – a guide to driver health issues and the revised driver medical standards (Assessing Fitness to Drive), including a range of strategies to help operators address driver health.
Tool Box Talks – including Facilitator Notes , Fact Sheets and PowerPoint Presentations to enable operators to address health issues in regular communication forums with drivers.
