THE NATIONAL Transport Commission’s (NTC) Proposed National Model Rail Safety Regulations 2006 and an associated Model Rail Safety (Reform) Regulations: Draft Regulatory Impact Statement - July 2006 have been released for comment. The model Regulations set out regulatory requirements applicable to parties responsible for rail safety.
The NTC will host information sessions in conjunction with transport regulators and agencies throughout Australia to brief interested parties during the consultation period. The information sessions will also include briefings on the program of activities which is underway to support the implementation of the rail safety legislation in all states and territories by July 2007.

The closing date for comments is Thursday, 24 August, 2006. Comment is also sought on the implementation of the model Rail Safety Bill. Responses will be reviewed and acted on where necessary to ensure that the Bill achieves its intended purpose.
The Regulations are scheduled to be submitted to the Australian Transport Council for approval in late 2006.
