Title: 2008/09 Annual Report highlights national achievements
Article Date: 28 Oct 2009

The National Transport Commission (NTC) today released its 2008/09 Annual Report themed around the ‘end-to-end’ movement of goods and people and highlighting recent achievements in national transport policy reform.

NTC chief executive Nick Dimopoulos said the 2008/09 Annual Report shows a year of progress on transport reforms focussing on delivering integrated national outcomes considering all modes, users and policy objectives.

“The last financial year saw some historic steps forward, led by transport ministers and supported by the NTC, in delivering national consistency of regulation and improved transport outcomes.

“The establishment of single national regulators for heavy vehicles and rail safety will deliver better productivity and safety outcomes for industry, and the consistent commencement of the national heavy vehicle fatigue reforms in four states on 29 September was also a significant achievement.”

Key achievements in the report include:

  • work towards the national rail safety regulator;
  • supply chain pilot studies;
  • performance based standards review; and
  • the implementation of the new heavy vehicle driver fatigue laws.

Mr Dimopoulos said that the achievements of the last year were due to the commitment and collaboration of the NTC’s stakeholders including governments, industry and unions.

Moving forward, the NTC will continue to work towards delivering nationally consistent transport reforms and will seek to build on the ‘end to end’ theme in this year’s report, focusing on an integrated approach to reform development.
